Geocaching: The Modern Day Treasure Hunting
Geocaching this is a game more likely a hide and seek but with a twist. Best of all you get to use a GPS. It is considered to be an outdoor game because you need to locate containers that contain a logbook that needs to be filled with the date that the geocacher had found it. This game is played by people all over the world that ages 5 and up. Toys, Gadgets and other items serves as a reward for the cacher who finds it.
Originally, the name of the game was “GPS stash hunt” or “Gpsstashing” inspired from the equipments needed to conduct the activity. The name Geocaching was suggested by one of the players named Matt Stum, on one of the discussion groups for Gpsstashing. But the word Geocaching comes from two separate words which is then combined. Geo form the word Geography and which also means location and cache is a term used in computer engineering describing a component that stores in data. The whole concept of the game derived from putting ideas together adding up some of the treasure hunting games, while other rules comes from the basic hide and seek game.
Before starting out, you have to first understand the basic rules of the game as well as the terms used.
Geocache – this is a waterproof container with different shapes and size. Inside it is the “treasure” and logbook. The item is hidden and the cacher or the player needs to find it.
GPS (Global Positioning System) – a navigation device that points to the location of an object by using coordinates. It was first used by the military to locate their target when in battle or locate their allies when a back-up is requested. The the game of Geocaching, GPS is used to locate hidden items by other cachers.
Muggle – a person that is not familiar with the game. Usually, they are hindrances in finding the cache or they have stolen the contents of the cache.
Geocacher – a person playing the game and hunts for geocaches.
These days, Geocaching it is played in seven continents. The game Geocaching takes the whole treasure hunting experience to a higher level by integrating modern technology and facilities. This game is best played for people who likes the feeling of finding things. The best part of this activity is that people from different age groups can participate.
