The art of massage has been documented from the earliest civilizations, including Mesopotamia, Egypt and Roman. Hippocrates wrote in 460 BC “the consultant must be experienced in numerous things, but decidedly in rubbing.” In Western culture, massage did not truly become well-liked till the 19th Century, when consultants started to implement this as part of the recovery process.
Massage comes in many forms, following from various practices internationally, some of the more preferred methods include acupressure, Ayurvedic, deep tissue, Lomi Lomi, myofascial, reflexology, remedial, Shiatsu, Swedish and trigger point.
Each one of these techniques target numerous outcomes, but the commonality is the utilisation of pressure applied to numerous parts of the body to manipulate the muscles and connective tissues. In fact , the word “massage” is a French word stemming from Arabic (massa meaning to touch, feel or handle) or the Greek verb (masso meaning to handle, touch, to work with the hands). The latin word for massage was frictio.
Massage has been, and is, utilized for all kinds of ailments, particularly pain alleviation related to muscle-bound wounds. But massage also can aid in the reduction in blood pressure and heart rate, it can reduce stress and anxiety, help with depression, improve sleep and has been shown to help those suffering cerebral palsy. It is even claimed that massage may help with attention and alertness.
The massage industry is highly diversified and as such finding the proper therapist to treat the symptoms you as a patient might be experiencing can be extremely tough. So before calling just anybody alleging to offer massage consider what you are hunting for is it purely for relaxation or is it remedial? Is the therapist licensed? Are you privy to the method and what it will do for you?
Research first, make sure the massage therapist is reputable and choose sensibly.
